Outdoor learning at Hyrstmount Junior School
At Hyrstmount we believe in creating learning experiences that equip our children in their daily school life and beyond. Outdoor learning is an integral part of our school curriculum and allows all children in Hyrstmount to experience active learning in a variety of settings.
Outdoor learning helps us to fulfil our school’s vision and aims. We achieve this by offering every child at least one lesson outside a week, in either the forest, pond, Jo’s garden or other areas of the school grounds. All lessons correspond directly with the work being done in class and extend the children’s knowledge of taught subjects.
Regular outdoor learning improves health and well being, broadens the learning experience and makes learning more accessible to all learners.
“Placing children in the outdoors for learning allows for increased engagement of the senses, engaging sight, sound, smell and touch. This may allow for more attentive, and a richer form, of learning”. Wilderness Schooling (2017)
Over the past 4 years we have worked in partnership with Grow to School to ensure that the lessons are of the highest quality and that they fit seamlessly with our long term planning.
