Curriculum Statement

Here at Hyrstmount Junior School, we ensure that the statutory requirements of the new National Curriculum are met. The National Curriculum subjects are taught discretely but links are made between subject areas where this is deemed appropriate and beneficial to children’s learning. Maths and English are taught daily and children are given regular opportunities to apply their skills in reading, writing and maths across a range of subject areas. To bring learning to life, school visits, visitors and celebration events are a mainstay of the curriculum and wherever possible children learn through first-hand experience. At Hyrstmount, it is our aim to ensure that the curriculum we teach builds on the individual talents and expertise of our children so that all have the opportunity to shine. Our children learn how to respect each other and to respect diversity, preparing them for life in a multi-cultural society.

Through our curriculum we aim to:

• Enrich children’s lives, broadening their knowledge and understanding of the world.
• Inspire children to have a love of learning that will last them a lifetime
• Develop children’s emotional intelligence and social skills
• Promote the school values of responsibility, empathy, cooperation, determination and respect.
• Prepare our children for Secondary Education by ensuring that all of our pupils leave Hyrstmount competent in maths and English
• Be flexible enough to respond to children’s interests, satisfying their natural curiosity through an enquiry-based approach to learning.
• Prioritise the development of children’s verbal communication skills, so that children are articulate and confident speakers in a range of contexts.
• Prepare our children to live in a multi-cultural society, promoting the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
